REVIEWS:

"1980's 'The Stunt Man'...is a highly engrossing, mesmerizing
experience. .... Peter O'Toole, Steve Railsback, and Barbara Hershey star
in this movie-within-a-movie. Everyone here is great, but Mr. O'Toole is,
in my opinion, Oscar-caliber as the hard-as-nails director attempting
desperately to make the perfect anti-war film. [And O'Toole was, indeed,
nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in this film.]
The quirky music score adds amusement to the stunt scenes performed
by Railsback. High praise is deserved all around for this one."

"The gamesmanship of 'The Stunt Man' is fast and furious, but gamesmanship is almost all it manages to be. .... 'The Stunt Man' begins when Cameron (Steve Railsback), a Vietnam veteran and a fugitive from the police, wanders into the path of a film being directed by...Eli Cross (Peter O'Toole). .... Eli...proclaims his independence in fierce and playful terms. .... He says, 'because they know that if they touch my film, I'll kill them. I'll kill them and I'll eat them.' Mr. O'Toole delivers lines like this magnificently. And, as [Director Richard] Rush employs him, he becomes the film's greatest resource, personifying all the wiles the screenplay has to offer. The movie springs magically to life when Mr. O'Toole makes his appearance, whether he's striding into the frame or appearing on a crane, as if from the sky."
